TERRE HAUTE — The Northview Knights teed off on the 2016 girls’ golf season with a pair of 18-hole tournaments this week. With school not in session yet, the Knights headed to Plainfield to compete in a tourney at Deer Creek Golf Course on Monday. Northview followed that up with a trip to Rea Park in Terre Haute to play in the Braves Invite on Tuesday evening.

Monday’s opener came against a stout field that contained three teams that finished in the top-15 at the IHSAA State Finals last fall.
Zionsville captured the title on Monday evening with a 315 to edge out Plainfield by five strokes. Center Grove was a distant third with a 344 followed by Terre Haute North. A youthful Knights’ squad shot 488 to finish ninth.
Northview returns just one player from last year’s postseason team as Shay Ehrlich shot a 99 at Deer Creek and on Tuesday at Rea Park.
“Shay got better today. The last five holes I think she was two-over-par. Early on she struggled a little bit,” Northview coach Zack Keyes said. “Shooting a 99 on back-to-back days at Deer Creek and Rea Park is a good score.”
Keyes admitted that the team has work to do, but he sees promise in the young golfers.
“We’re young and that is the biggest thing,” Keyes noted. “We are going to have holes where we hit good shots and we’ll have holes that we struggle. That is just part of it. We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
On Tuesday, Ehrlich led the team again with her 99 as Northview shot a 470 to place seventh in the eight-team field. Terre Haute North’s Blue Team won a battle for the top spot by one stroke over Vincennes Rivet (346-347) as Terre Haute South was third with a 348.

Rivet’s Grace Waggoner shot a 71 to earn medalist honors.
Aimee Treash shot a 110 to place second on the Knights followed by Sophia Buell’s 125 and a 136 from Heidi Ehrlich.
“I think the most important thing is that they are having fun. If they aren’t having any fun then we aren’t doing a very good job,” Keyes said. “As far as ball striking, I thought we got better. I don’t think that our scores were drastically better than they were yesterday, but I thought we struck the ball better today.”
The Knights return to action on Tuesday at Cloverdale in a three-way meet that includes Linton beginning at 4:30 p.m.
